Paul "Triple H" Levesque and CM Punk once had a difficult past, but now, they are working closely together in WWE. From once barely talking to now collaborating on creative ideas, their relationship has taken a huge turn. Triple H recently shared how things have changed between them, and how they are now building the future of WWE side by side.
When CM Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series 2023, fans were shocked to see him and Triple H smiling together. Behind the scenes, though, it took effort and talks to fix what was once a broken bond. Triple H has now shared about their journey and how they’re now creating magic together on TV.
Triple H talks about their problems, which are already past
Speaking on the
High Performance podcast, Triple H explained what caused the problems between him and
CM Punk years ago.
“There was probably a dislike of each other,” he said. He explained that the issues mostly came from bad communication. At the time, he was trying to handle things between Punk and the creative team. But instead of helping, it made Punk think Triple H was against him.
Now, Triple H says things have changed. Before Punk came back at Survivor Series 2023, they had an honest phone call. Triple H wanted to make sure they were on the same page before working together again. Since then, they have kept the communication clear.
Triple H shared an example of how they now handle creative disagreements better than before: “We’ve had a couple of moments since his return — like, there was one moment where [after his return] and they had told him something creatively and they told me, ‘He does not like this.’ And I was like, ‘Ok, I’ll talk to him.’ Went and talked to him and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ You know, told him the creative. And he was like, ‘No, it’s good, whatever.’ And I was like, ‘I know you don’t like it, everybody’s told me. So let’s be open.’ So then he complained about what it was, and I said, ‘Ok, let’s go sit and talk about it [and] come up with something good.’ Like, I’m not married to that stuff, it’s just a thought and an idea.”
Triple H now enjoys working with CM Punk
That small moment turned into something big for
Triple H and Punk. “He was angry and he walked away from me. And then a couple minutes later, he came back. He was like, ‘I’m sorry, I have post-traumatic stress disorder still from before. I forget that it’s [different]. I’m not used to this process. I would love to sit down with you and be creative.’”
Triple H said that their relationship has grown a lot since then. “And that sort of changed, like a paradigm shift for us relationship-wise. Now, it’s a funny thing for me to even say: Sitting down and being collaborative with CM Punk is one of my favorite things at TV. Because he shares a very similar view, at the end of the day, of the business as I do. So it’s like fun now for me.”
He admitted that years ago, working with Punk was something he would have hated. But now, Triple H says he truly enjoys coming up with ideas together.
