The greatest of all time John Cena contemplates WWE retirement

Professional wrestler and actor John Cena hinted at the possible ... Read More
NEW DELHI: In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, iconic professional wrestler and actor John Cena hinted at the possible closure of his illustrious in-ring career, acknowledging the demands of age. Cena, who turned 47 recently, expressed a desire to give his all to WWE audiences but emphasized the need for an exit strategy as he navigates the twilight of his wrestling journey.

The 16-time world champion, tied with WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair for the most titles ever won by a single competitor, explained, "I'm trying to figure out when to close that chapter. I wouldn't be who I am — professionally or personally — without the WWE, and I promised myself that I would never simply just be there for my own sake."

Cena's wrestling journey began in 1998 when he started training in California, eventually making a name for himself in the Ultimate Pro Wrestling promotion. He joined WWE's developmental promotion, Ohio Valley Wrestling, and officially debuted in WWE in 2002, winning his first world championship at WrestleMania 23 in 2007.

Although Cena hasn't been a regular presence on WWE television since 2017, his sporadic returns make him one of the most decorated and celebrated wrestlers in history. Speculation about a potential storyline for Cena to return and surpass Ric Flair's record has been a persistent topic among wrestling enthusiasts.

While Cena did not confirm discussions with WWE about a retirement storyline, he expressed a willingness to do what's best for the company. "If it's a big final match or if it's just a final match, or however I can be integrated into the product to let everyone know that this chapter is over, I'm willing to listen to what WWE has to say."

Cena's post-retirement plans include remaining connected to the wrestling world. He envisions becoming a mentor or coach for WWE's next generation of wrestlers. "I do have almost two and a half decades of wisdom built up where I think I can offer a mentor perspective for sure," he stated.

Acknowledging his extensive career in wrestling and the curiosity that comes with it, Cena added, "I basically just want to still leave WWE with my head up high and for the audience to be able to appreciate the effort that I've given."

In the meantime, Cena's Hollywood career continues to thrive, with his upcoming film "Argylle" set to hit theaters on February 2, featuring stars like Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill.
