John Cena went on a full-blown verbal rant against the
WWE Universe in his very first promo as a heel. This served as a reminder for the fans of all the epic promos which left them stunned for an eternity.
On the latest episode of WWE Raw, John Cena finally came out and called out the WWE Universe for their incessant hatred towards him. He put it in plain words that ever since he stepped foot in WWE, he was not liked and it kept on growing with every passing day.
He was stopped midway by Cody Rhodes but instead of rebuffing the American Nightmare, he simply gave him a volley of capricious emotions on his face. However, this is not the first time that a heel promo drew boos loud enough to bring the roof down. The Rock himself who is also a part of the storyline, sent the audience flying into a frenzy of boos when he turned on Cody Rhodes last year.
As Cena’s hard-hitting promo left the fans angry, it is the perfect time to take a glance back at three such promos which blazed the trail for some incredible storytelling. The words dug deep, cutting into the fans’ soul while the entire segment disseminated its aura across the WWE Universe as the legends knew exactly how to make the words and the moments count.
3. Paul Heyman's ‘shoot’ promo on Vince McMahon (2001)
Out of all the heels the Stamford-based company has created,
Vince McMahon might have been one of the biggest and finest heels of all time. Yet, when Paul Heyman decided to take him on, there was hardly anything that he could do. On a SmackDown episode ahead of the 2001 Survivor Series, Heyman left McMahon scathed with a promo that went down in history as one of the finest. Heyman stole the show with the lines ‘You took Hulk Hogan’s blood and you built Titan Towers. You stole Bret Hart’s dream and with that money, you put yourself on an airplane with WWF all over it.’ McMahon could only stare in the eyes of Paul and absorb everything that was spat out on his face.
2. Triple H berating Shawn Michaels on his return (2002)
It was after four years that the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels was back in WWE and Triple H met him in the locker room. The duo came out to the ring to reform the D-Generation X. However, a few moments later, he left the world stunned, delivering a Pedigree to Shawn Michaels. Following this shocking betrayal, he conjured an intense promo where he labelled HBK as the weaker one in the tag-team while hailing himself as the bedrock of all the success. This arrogance from Hunter led to the birth of an iconic rivalry which led to many top matches between them.
1. CM Punk’s Pipebomb (2011)
The Straightedge Saviour’s contract with WWE was all set to end after Money in the Bank 2011. It was well known that in real life, CM Punk wasn’t happy with the way the company utilized him. Soon, it all came out like a gushing fountain as Punk sat on the ramp, took the mic and went all guns blazing against Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. He also labelled John Cena as someone who didn’t want younger talent to flourish. His glance into the camera was menacing enough to shatter the fourth wall, hardening his legend into the pro-wrestling folklore and was the starting point of his rise to main event.
