NEW DELHI: Iga Swiatek showcased her ability to thrive under pressure by defeating Jil Teichmann with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 16 at the
Bad Homburg Open.
During the opening service game of the Polish player, the Swiss competitor, Teichmann, applied early pressure and had three break points. The intense game lasted for 18 points, but Swiatek, coming off her recent triumph at the French Open, managed to hold her serve.
Following that crucial hold, Swiatek displayed dominance on her serves until the closing moments of the match, when she successfully saved two more break points.
It was in the fifth game that Swiatek made a breakthrough, catching Teichmann off guard with an unexpected between-the-legs shot that led to an error from her opponent. Responding to a lob at 30-40, Swiatek chose to execute a tweener shot, and although it fell short, Teichmann failed to return it properly, slicing her response out of play.
From that point on, Swiatek cruised through the match until the final game.
Historically, Swiatek has faced difficulties on grass courts. She has never progressed beyond the fourth round at
Wimbledon, despite reaching at least the semi-finals in every other major tournament.
"I think it's my first grass-court quarter-final, so pretty excited," Swiatek said on court. "For sure, today was a good day. I was happy with my performance. I felt like I had everything under control and that's great."
In the quarter-finals, Swiatek will face Anna Blinkova, who beat Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-2.
In other matches, Lucia Bronzetti outlasted fourth-seeded Mayar Sherif 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 in 2 hours 51 minutes and Katerina Siniakova beat Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-4.
