NEW YORK: World No.18 Maria Sakkari struck 46 winners in her US Open fourth-round win over the 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu. She might've saved her best shot for the last, however, for after the 3-hour 30-minute encounter that ended at 2.13 am.
"Go home guys, it's late, don't be late for work tomorrow," the popular Greek told the faithful at the Arthur Ashe stadium, tearing up as she added her appreciation.
The 26-year-old snapped the Canadian's 10-match unbeaten streak in New York with a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory that put her in her second major quarterfinal of the season.
Andreescu levelled at 6-6 in the tie-break and looked set to close out the match, but Sakkari wasn't done.
"I mean, there was a decent crowd staying until 2:30 at night," she said. "I said, Maria, you cannot give up. Just stay focused and stay calm and just make balls. Just try."
