NEW DELHI: Former world number one and 2016 US Open finalist, Karolina Pliskova, was forced to retire from her second-round match against Jasmine Paolini due to a left ankle injury.
The incident occurred early in the match on Thursday, with Pliskova sustaining the injury after only three points.
The match, held on Louis Armstrong Stadium, lasted a mere six minutes before being officially concluded with Paolini declared the winner at a score of 0-0.
Fifth seed Paolini, a finalist at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, expressed her concern for Pliskova.
"I hope she recovers soon because it's sad to see her leave the court like this. We didn't really play a match. It's not good for tennis. I just hope she gets well and we see her back on the courts soon," she said.
With Pliskova's withdrawal, Paolini advanced to the third round of the tournament.
She is scheduled to face Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan for a place in the round of 16.
