Last year at the Australian Open, Nagal, then ranked 137th, achieved a remarkable victory. He defeated the 27th-ranked Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in straight sets in the opening round. He eventually lost to China's Juncheng Shang in the subsequent round.

In preparation for the Australian Open, Nagal participated in the Auckland ASB Classic. He lost to Alex Michelsen of the USA in a challenging match that lasted two hours and 40 minutes. The final score was 7-6 (8), 4-6, 2-6 as he made an early exit from the tuneup tournament.

Recently, Nagal declined to represent India in the Davis Cup. This isn't the first time he has chosen not to participate in the international team competition.
