Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has announced that she will retire from professional tennis following the 2025 US Open, marking the end of an illustrious 19-year career. The 35-year-old Czech star shared the news on social media shortly after receiving a wild card for this year’s Wimbledon, expressing excitement to “soak in the beauty of playing The Championships, Wimbledon one more time,” a tournament that holds her “most cherished memories.”
Kvitova reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in 2011 and won Wimbledon twice, in 2011 and 2014, with her powerful left-handed serve and aggressive style making her a formidable grass-court player. She also helped the Czech Republic secure six Fed Cup titles (now the Billie Jean King Cup) and earned an Olympic bronze medal at Rio 2016. In 2019, she reached the Australian Open final.
After a 17-month maternity break following the birth of her son during Wimbledon 2024, Kvitova returned to the WTA Tour in February 2025 but has struggled with form and injuries, winning just one match in seven tournaments since her comeback.
