CHENNAI, Jan 3: Defending champion Carlos Moya of Spain got a scare before coming back to post a 6-4 3-6 6-1 win in his first match of the ATP Tour in Chennai Open here tonight.
In earlier first round singles matches this evening, Indian qualifier Rohan Bopanna joined compatriot Prakash Amirtraj in the second round with a deserving 6-3 6-3 win over higher-ranked Cyril Sauliner (90th) of France to set up a second round clash against seasoned Jiri Vanek (Czech).

In the other (first round) matches, fourth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand quelled the challenge of a fighting Ramon Delgado (Paraguay) 4-6 6-1 7-6 (3), fifth seeded Gilles Muller (Luxumberg) beat Razvan Sabau (Romania) 6-2 7-6 (5) and sixth-seeded Rainer Shuettler of Germany scored a straight-set 6-4 6-3 win over Fernando Vicente of Spain.
Second-seeded Stepanek (Czech) defeated Ivan Navarro Pastor (Spain) 6-4 7-6(3), while qualifier, Michael Berrer (Germany) put paid to the aspirations of direct entrant Lukas Dlouby (Cze) 3-6 6-3 6-2.
In the Moya-Norman match, the Spaniard, playing his rival for the second time on a ATP tour circuit with 1-0 head-to-head ratio, took a while to study the strong points of Norman, the second tallest player on the ATP circuit at 6'8", and led the first set 4-2 with break in the fifth game for the set.
