2016 Olympics: India at Rio, Day 1

Drag-flickers VR Raghunath (15th minute) and Rupinder (27th, 49th) converted three out of seven penalty corners India earned in the match to secure their first win in an opening clash at the Olympics since Sydney Games 2000.

Rupinder Pal Singh struck twice as drag-flickers ruled the roost to help India register a fighting 3-2 win over Ireland.

Ireland gave India a run for their money, especially in the second half, finding the net twice through Jermyn John (45th) and Conor Harte (56th)

Jitu Rai qualified for the final of 10m Air Pistol in sixth place shooting 580 points in the qualification stage consisting of six series.

Jitu’s compatriot Gurpreet Singh ended at the 20th position in a field of 46 shooters, thus exiting the competition.

In the final, Jitu Rai was way off the mark finishing a lowly eighth to bow out of the competition in the Rio Olympics.

At Olympic Tennis Centre, the pair of Paes and Bopanna exited in the first round of the men’s doubles. Paes - in his record seventh Games - and Bopanna were beaten 4-6, 6-7 by Poland’s Marcin Matkowski and Lukas Kubot.

It was a first round exit for Table Tennis player Manika Batra

Batra lost 12-10, 6-11, 12-14, 11-8, 4-11, 12-14 to Poland’s Katarzyna Grzybowska-Franc

In his first round match, Soumyajit Ghosh lost to Thailand's Tanviriyavechakul Padasak 8-11, 6-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-13

India's Ayonika Paul (in pic) and Apurvi Chandela have failed to go past the qualification round in 10m Air Rifle. Chandela (411.6) finished 34th while Ayonika could only manage a 43rd spot with a final score of 407.
