Earlier this year, sprinter Dutee Chand became the first Indian woman to compete in the

100m event

at the Olympics in 36 years and the second ever, after PT Usha competed in the 100m and 200m at the 1980 Moscow Games. Since qualification standards were introduced at the 1988 Seoul Games, she is the first.

Dutee became the first Indian to qualify in the 100m event at Rio after clocking a record time of 11.30 seconds during heats at the XXVI International Meeting G Kosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Later that day, she bettered the national record when he clocked 11.24 seconds to win silver in the final.



It marks a remarkable comeback for an athlete who, at the age of 18, was banned for an indefinite period under the guidelines of the International Association of Athletics Federations (

IAAF

) that debar athletes with

hyperandrogenism

- excessive but naturally occurring testosterone - in the women's category. To her credit, Dutee held her own and won the right to compete again in July 2015 after a landmark legal battle at the
