VALENCIA: Danny Webb made history for Mahindra Racing in the 125cc class at the Valencia Grand Prix on Saturday, taking his first-ever pole in the last race of the 2011 MotoGP season with a fastest lap of 1 minute 45.898 seconds, in an exciting qualifying held in mixed conditions.
The 20-year-old Englishman ran almost half-a-second faster than anyone round the 4.005-km Ricardo Tormo circuit at Valencia, putting his silver and-red bike up front for the first time in the marquee's debut season of racing.

The joy in the pit was all the more great because of the presence, for the first time, of Mahindra Group's vice chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra. An hour earlier, he had unveiled the Indian team's 250cc four stroke Moto3 machine for the 2012 season - MGP30 (pronounced 'three oh' ) - for the category that will take over from the traditional 125cc next year.
The session was run in challenging half-wet conditions , with all riders using treaded 'wet' tyres. Webb thought differently, as conditions improved slightly towards the end of the 40 minutes . He persuaded the team to fit slick tyres in spite of the risks, and was able to make the most of them.
Mahindra Group boss Anand Mahindra was happy with the turn of events.
"My first grand prix, and as soon as I come we get our first pole position! I think I am going to change my schedule for next year! It's very exciting for all of us to have that winning feeling, though the race is tomorrow … The team has made a lot of progress in our first year, and this pole position is a good reward. Let's hope for a good race," he said.
