NEW DELHI: The Indian Paralympic team has made history in Paris, surpassing their previous best medal tally of 19 achieved in Tokyo 2020. The team has secured 22 medals, comprising four gold, eight silver, and ten bronze.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar for their respective bronze and silver medal wins in the men's high jump T6 final.
"Congratulations to Mariyappan Thangavelu on the winning the Bronze medal in the Men's High Jump T63 event. It is commendable that he has won medals in three consecutive editions of the Paralympics. His skills, consistency and determination are exceptional," PM Modi wrote on X.
Thangavelu's achievement marks his third consecutive Paralympic medal, a testament to his exceptional skill, consistency, and determination. Kumar's performance, securing silver with a jump of 1.88m, was lauded by PM Modi for inspiring the nation.
"Sharad Kumar wins Silver in Men's High Jump T63 at #Paralympics2024! He is admired for his consistency and excellence. Congrats to him. He inspires the entire nation," PM Modi wrote on X.
The high jump final saw a record-breaking performance by American athlete Ezra Frech, who clinched gold with a jump of 1.94m, setting a new Paralympic record.
India's success extended beyond the high jump, with athletes Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar securing silver and bronze medals respectively in the men's javelin throw F46 event.
This double podium finish further underscores the depth and talent within the Indian Paralympic contingent.
This year, India sent its largest-ever Paralympic delegation to Paris, with 84 athletes competing across 12 sports. This participation signifies a substantial investment in para-sports infrastructure and athlete development within the country.
The Paris 2024 Paralympics serves as a platform for these athletes to showcase their abilities on the world stage and inspire future generations of para-athletes in India.
With several competition days remaining, the Indian team has the potential to further elevate their medal count and solidify their position as a force to be reckoned with in the world of para-sports.
