NEW DELHI: India experienced a triumphant day at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Monday, advancing to the 22nd position with a medal count of nine.
The success was bolstered by para-badminton player Nitesh Kumar’s gold and discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya’s silver in their respective events.
The achievements garnered praise from Indian sports legend Sachin Tendulkar, who congratulated both the athletes on social media for their outstanding performances.
Nitesh secured India’s second gold medal of the 2024 Games by defeating Britain's Daniel Bethell in the badminton Men's Singles SL3 category.
The match concluded with a scoreline of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 at the La Chapelle Arena Court 1 in Paris.
The SL3 category accommodates players with moderate movement impairments affecting one side of the body, both legs, or featuring limb absences. Competitors play on a half-width court, with restricted movement but full shot capabilities.
Meanwhile, Kathuniya claimed the silver medal in the Men's Discus Throw - F56 event, recording his season's best throw.
Kathuniya threw 42.22 meters to secure the silver, coming in behind Brazil's Claudiney Batista dos Santos, who won gold with a Paralympic record throw of 46.86 meters. The bronze was taken by Greece's Konstantinos Tzounis, who had his best throw at 41.32 meters.
Kathuniya achieved his silver-winning throw on his first attempt and made subsequent throws of 41.50 meters, 41.55 meters, 40.33 meters, 40.89 meters, and 39.68 meters.
