Simone Biles, the legendary American gymnast, clinched her fifth Olympic gold medal as she spearheaded the United States to a resounding triumph in the women's gymnastics team final on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Daniel Wiffen made history for Ireland in the swimming competition.Biles, widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, aimed to put the disappointment of the Tokyo 2021 Olympics behind her.At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Biles pulled out because of a mental block that gymnasts call the 'twisties'. It hurt USA's chances of gold and they had to settle for a silver medal.
However, with Biles back in top form, she and her teammates Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Sunisa Lee dominated the competition from start to finish. They reclaimed the gold medal, with Italy securing silver and Brazil taking bronze. This victory marks Biles's return to the Olympic pinnacle after a two-year hiatus during which she prioritized her mental well-being. Lee, the all-around champion in Tokyo, has also overcome two potentially career-ending kidney ailments since her previous Olympic success.Biles reflected on the significance of her second team gold, coming eight years after her first, noting that it felt different from her previous triumph.
"It was just like we were a little young and naive," she was quoted as saying about 2016 by AFP. "So it didn't hit the way that it does now."Now that I'm much older, we have so much more experience and we're out here really having fun and enjoying what we're doing."Biles had a star-studded audience cheering her on once more. The crowd included luminaries such as Serena Williams, Nicole Kidman and Bill Gates. Biles's supportive husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, was also present, proudly wearing a T-shirt featuring his wife's name and image. At La Defense Arena, Irish swimmer Wiffen's emotions overwhelmed him as he stood on the podium. His victory marked a historic moment, as he became the first swimmer ever from Ireland to secure an Olympic gold medal in the sport.
"I don't normally cry, so I really hope that nobody's gonna see that," he said.Dominating the 800m freestyle, the 23-year-old swimmer showcased incredible speed, clocking in at 7min 38.19sec, which stands as the fifth-fastest time in history, ahead of American defending champion Bobby Finke and Tokyo silver medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy.Wiffen, who is also the world champion, was born in England and has a busy schedule ahead as he is yet to compete in the 1500m freestyle and the grueling 10km open water swim event in Paris. In the women's 100m backstroke, Kaylee McKeown successfully defended her title, showcasing an impressive second lap that propelled her past the USA's Regan Smith, the current world record-holder. This victory marked Australia's fourth gold medal in the swimming events in Paris. The men's 4x200m freestyle relay saw a triumphant performance from the British team, adding to their medal tally.
