NEW DELHI: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has secured her place in the semifinals of the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling competition at the Paris Olympics. This marks her first-ever Olympic semifinal appearance, achieved through impressive victories against top-ranked opponents.

Phogat's journey began with a stunning upset against reigning Olympic and four-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan. Despite trailing 0-2 due to penalty points, Phogat exhibited remarkable resilience, securing a takedown in the final seconds to clinch a 3-2 victory.


Continuing her momentum, Phogat faced former European champion and world championship bronze medalist Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals. In a tightly contested bout, Phogat displayed tactical prowess and controlled the pace, ultimately securing a 7-5 victory. Her strategic approach and ability to counter Livach's attacks proved crucial in securing her semifinal berth.

Phogat's journey to the semifinals marks a significant milestone in her Olympic career, having previously competed in two Olympics without securing a medal.

Standing between Phogat and a guaranteed medal is Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. A victory in the semifinal bout will secure at least a silver medal for Phogat, while a loss will place her in the bronze medal match.


With eyes across the globe fixed on her, Phogat is set to build on her impressive streak and capture India's first wrestling medal at the Paris Olympics. That said, her first two victories at the Games have already sparked a whirlwind of excitement online.
