NEW DELHI: Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams during her second weigh-in in the women's 50 kg freestyle category. Despite her efforts to shed the extra weight overnight, she could not meet the requirement, leading to her disqualification.

The disqualification has caused controversy, bringing into question the fairness of the situation, particularly in relation to Antim Panghal's quota in the 53kg category, a weight class Vinesh previously competed in. Antim's coach, Vikas, addressed these allegations.

"Vinesh was injured when Antim was selected in 53kg, and she won the quota for India. There was no cheating by anyone," Vikas told IANS.

While Vinesh was recovering from an ACL injury, Antim emerged as a strong contender, winning a bronze medal at the senior world championship in the women's 53kg category and securing a quota for the Paris Olympics. This necessitated Vinesh's shift to the 50kg category.

Vinesh's journey through different weight categories highlights the challenges wrestlers face as their careers progress. She competed in the 48kg category at the 2016 Rio Olympics at the age of 22. However, maintaining that weight became increasingly challenging as she aged.

By the Tokyo Olympics, she had moved to the 53kg category, still struggling with significant weight loss, leading to poor recovery and frequent injuries.

The shift and subsequent weight management difficulties underscore the physical toll wrestling takes on athletes, a toll that is often compounded by stringent regulations and competitive pressures.
