NEW DELHI: Indian table tennis player Sreeja Akula lost 0-4 to world number one Yingsha Sun of China in the pre-quarterfinals of the women's singles competition at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, marking her exit in the round of 16.

Sreeja, the top-ranked Indian player, was defeated 10-12, 10-12, 8-11, 3-11 in a match lasting 38 minutes. This came just hours after she became only the second Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 at the Olympics.


Earlier in the competition, Sreeja advanced to the pre-quarterfinals after a challenging 4-2 win over Singapore's Jian Zeng in the round of 32.

She secured this victory with scores of 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, and 12-10, making her birthday on the same day even more memorable.


Manika Batra was the first Indian paddler to reach the round of 16 at the Olympics. She suffered a 1-4 defeat to Japan's Miu Hirano in the women's singles round of 16 clash.
