Srihari Nataraj finished joint-second in his heat with a time of 55.01 seconds in the 100m men's backstroke event, PTI reported.

However, this timing placed the 23-year-old at 33rd overall. His performance did not match his personal best of 53.77 seconds or his season best of 54.68 seconds. Only the 16 fastest swimmers from the heats advance to the semifinals.

Dhinidhi Desinghu, making her Olympic debut at 14, managed to top her 200m women's freestyle heat.

Swimming in the slowest heat, Dhinidhi recorded a time of 2:06.96. Despite her effort, she finished 23rd out of 30 participants in the overall standings.

Her competitors included Australia's three-time Olympic champion, Ariarne Titmus.
