NEW DELHI: Seasoned Indian table tennis player Harmeet Desai made a successful debut in his maiden Olympic appearance on Saturday at the Paris Olympics.
In the men's singles preliminary round match, the 31-year-old from Surat defeated Jordan's Zaid Abo Yaman in a comprehensive 4-0 victory, with the scoreline reading 11-7, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.
Desai, ranked significantly higher than his opponent at 538th in the world rankings, displayed a dominant performance throughout the 30-minute encounter.
He quickly established a comfortable rhythm and excelled in the extended rallies, often emerging victorious against his Jordanian counterpart.
After securing a comfortable win in the opening game, Desai carried forward the momentum into the second game, taking an early lead and maintaining his superiority until the end of the match.
Harmeet Desai's journey to the Olympics has been a long-standing pursuit, having participated in various other top global competitions over the years. His achievements include being part of the Indian team that clinched gold medals at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In Paris, Desai is representing India alongside veteran Sharath Kamal as one of the two men's singles players. His preparation for the Olympics involved competing in three preparatory tournaments and undergoing personal training in Germany.
With this convincing victory, Harmeet Desai has advanced to the second round of the men's singles table tennis competition, keeping his Olympic campaign alive and progressing further in the prestigious event.
