NEW DELHI: The Indian men's hockey team returned to a hero's welcome at Amritsar airport on Sunday after winning their second consecutive Olympic bronze medal in Paris by defeating Spain 2-1. Family members and fans, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of ‘dhol,’ created a lively atmosphere to celebrate the team's homecoming.

Elated family members greeted the players with garlands and hugs while state leaders, including minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, extended their congratulations. The team's achievement in Paris has sparked pride nationwide.

Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian team captain from Timmowal village in Amritsar, was visibly moved by the reception and expressed his gratitude.



"We will do our best in the future so that this sport gets more love," Harmanpreet was quoted as saying by PTI. Known as 'Sarpanch' by his fans, the 28-year-old also urged the youth to embrace sports, prioritize education, and stay away from drugs.

Following the celebrations at the airport, the team visited the Golden Temple to offer prayers.

Players from Punjab who joined Harmanpreet in the celebrations included Mandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Hardik Singh. They were all warmly welcomed in their home state.
