NEW DELHI: Indian sailors Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan faced challenges in the opening series of their respective sailing events at the Paris Olympics. Both athletes saw their rankings slip after a mixed bag of results on Saturday, leaving them with significant ground to cover in the remaining races.

Nethra Kumanan, competing in the women's dinghy ILCA 6 event, began Saturday in 11th position after a promising opening day. However, she struggled to maintain her momentum, finishing 19th in Race 4 and 25th in Race 5. A slight recovery in Race 6, where she secured 24th place, provided a glimmer of hope.

Meanwhile, Vishnu Saravanan, representing India in the men's dinghy ILCA 7 event, also experienced a dip in performance. Starting Saturday in 22nd place, he dropped to 23rd after finishing in the same position in both Race 5 and Race 6.

The opening series for both the men's and women's dinghy events comprises ten races. With six races completed, Kumanan sits in 24th position and Saravanan in 23rd. Four more races are scheduled: two on Sunday (Race 7 and Race 8) and two on Monday.

The culmination of the opening series will see the top 10 boats in each event advance to the medal race on Tuesday. The final rankings, and ultimately the medal winners, will be determined by the combined scores from the opening series and the medal race.

Both Kumanan and Saravanan face an uphill battle to break into the top 10 and secure a spot in the medal race. The remaining races will be crucial for the Indian sailors as they aim to climb the leaderboard and make their mark on the Olympic stage.
