NEW DELHI: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Tuesday that he will be meeting with the Indian men's hockey team, who recently secured a bronze medal, before September 10.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and formulate strategies for the team's future, with the ultimate goal of securing the gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Upon their return from Paris on Tuesday morning, Mandaviya personally felicitated key members of the team, including star goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, defender Sanjay, Amit Rohidas, and striker Abhishek, in recognition of their outstanding performance reported PTI.
"It's been a wonderful performance from you guys, we didn't get the gold but we came very close to it and the way you guys inspired after the semifinal loss is commendable," Mandaviya said.
"But it's not the end of the road and I will sit with you by September 10 and churn out future course of action so that we should return with nothing less than gold from Los Angeles. I will seek your opinion on how to go about it and try to provide you with all possible support from the government."
The minister expressed contentment with the Indian contingent's performance, despite not equaling their previous edition's achievement.
India secured six medals in Paris — five bronze and one silver — compared to the seven medals, including a gold, won in Tokyo.
Mandaviya lamented the Indians' narrow misses, finishing fourth in seven events. "In Tokyo, we won seven medals but in Paris we won six. But the fact is we missed out on seven more medals by finishing fourth, which is a worthy performance," he said.
Earlier, Mandaviya had honoured the other members of the hockey team who had returned before the rest of the contingent.
