Neeraj Chopra, the gold medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is one of the 24 armed forces personnel who will represent India at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indian contingent, consisting of 117 athletes, will compete in the global event starting from July 26.

The Miinistry of Defence announced on Saturday that the inclusion of two women participants from the armed forces in the Olympic contingent is a historic first. This milestone marks the debut of female service athletes representing India at the Olympic level.

Chopra's participation in the Paris Olympics follows a series of remarkable achievements, including gold medals at the 2023 Asian Games, 2023 World Athletics Championship, 2024 Diamond League, and 2024 Paavo Nurmi Games. He is a strong contender for the top prize once again.

Among the 24 armed forces personnel, 22 are men, with Neeraj being the most prominent name.

Also, 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Havildar Jaismine Lamboria and 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships bronze medallist CPO Ritika Hooda are the two women service personnel who are taking part in the Games for the first time, and would aim to create history. They will feature in boxing and wrestling respectively, it added.

Sub Amit Panghal (boxing), CPO Tajinderpal Singh Toor (shot-put), Sub Avinash Mukund Sable (3000m steeplechase), CPO Muhammed Anas Yahiya, PO (GW) Muhammed Ajmal, Sub Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, JWO Mijo Chacko Kurian (4x400m men's relay), JWO Abdulla Aboobacker (triple jump), Sub Tarundeep Rai, Sub Dhiraj Bommadevara (archery) and Nb Sub Sandeep Singh (shooting) are among the service personnel who will strive to bring honor to the nation.

In a recent post on X, the Indian Army stated, "13 #IndianArmy athletes will be participating in 7 disciplines at the #ParisOlympics2024. The Indian Army's formidable presence includes athletes renowned for their exceptional skills and past achievements on the world stage."

Gen Upendra Dwivedi, the Army Chief, recently engaged in a video conference with the Indian Army athletes who are set to compete in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
