NEW DELHI:Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater faced a setback in court on Tuesday as he was denied bail by a Queensland court. The 54-year-old, remanded in police custody, is charged with 19 domestic violence offences, including stalking and intimidation, allegedly committed on Queensland's Sunshine Coast between Dec. 5, 2023, and April 12.

The charges encompass unlawful stalking, assault occasioning bodily harm, and choking or strangulation. Slater reportedly denied all allegations of violence against the complainant, as per News Corp media.

The police prosecutor refrained from immediate comment when reached out to by Reuters.

Following the refusal of his bail application, Slater was taken into custody, with his matter scheduled for a committal hearing on May 31. Reports from Australian media outlets suggested that Slater collapsed in court upon the denial of bail by Magistrate Raelene Ellis. Prison officers assisted him to his feet before leading him away.

Slater, renowned as one of Australia's finest opening batsmen, played 74 tests from 1993 to 2001 and transitioned into a successful cricket commentator before his dismissal by the Seven Network in 2021.

This isn't Slater's first brush with legal issues; he has faced multiple domestic violence charges in recent years and has struggled with mental health challenges. In late 2022, Slater received a two-year community corrections order from a Sydney court after pleading guilty to charges, including common assault and attempted stalking of a woman. A community corrections order serves as a non-custodial punishment in Australia.
