In what must count as one of the more bizarre stories related to post-match revelry in English county cricket, the former Zimbabwe captain
Brendan Taylor was found asleep in someone's car following celebrations of his club Nottinghamshire's Royal London Cup quarter-final win.
On Wednesday morning, West Bridgford resident Michael Whitaker stepped out of his home to go to office and when he got to his Chevrolet Matiz parked his driveway, was stunned to find Taylor fast asleep inside.
Whitaker went back inside and called the police, and while waiting for them to arrive was surprised to find out that the man in the back of his car was Taylor, who led Zimbabwe in 63 internationals across formats before singing a Kolpak deal with Notts this year.
As reported by the
Nottingham Evening Post, Taylor had been out on the town on Tuesday night celebrating Notts' victory over Durham at at Trent Bridge. Apparently unable to find his way back to his flat as it rained heavily, the 29-year-old found the Whitaker's hatchback unlocked and got inside. That is where he fell asleep, only to be awoken the next morning at 8:50am by the car's owner.
"I don't think he knew where he was but he was very apologetic and it quickly became clear that it was very innocent," Whitaker, a business development manager, told the newspaper. "Realising who it was made it even funnier because how often do you find an international cricket star asleep in your car?"
The club chose not to comment on the incident, but the Nottinghamshire police said: "We attended the scene but concluded that no offence had been committed. The man in the car was extremely apologetic and even offered to get the car valeted."
Since leaving his native Zimbabwe, Taylor has played for Notts throughout the current county season.
