The NHL has once again clarified its stance, stating that it has no plans to change the Stanley Cup playoff format, despite growing criticism from top teams like the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild. The reason the league is standing firm on its controversial playoff format is that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and the league believe it will deliver high-intensity, early rounds, strong TV interest, and meaningful regular-season races.

Gary Bettman has repeatedly defended the playoff format, arguing that intense first-round series between strong teams will create better entertainment and higher stakes from the very start of the playoffs. But critics argue that this can force legitimate Stanley Cup contenders to eliminate each other too early, while other teams benefit from a clearer path in weaker divisions.

The NHL has refused to change its decision to return to the traditional playoff format despite growing pressure from teams and has decided to stick with the new format. Earlier, Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin publicly criticized the format, arguing that one of the top teams in the conference should not be eliminated so early.

Despite repeated criticisms, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has defended the current system and refused to return to the traditional 1-versus-8 conference seeding format.

According to Daily Faceoff, if the playoffs start, it could possibly happen that the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild would meet in the first round. The two rivals would sit second and third in the Central Division and the Western Conference. On the other hand, the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights would pit the fifth and seventh-best teams in the West against one another in the Pacific.


Meanwhile, NHL Insider David Pagnotta explained why the NHL doesn’t feel like changing its playoff format. Speaking to Daily Faceoff, he made it absolutely clear that the NHL won’t budge away from their division, even though many teams are demanding to go back to the old 1–8 conference seeding instead of the current setup.

“They’ve been very adamant about not changing it. There’s a lot of people that want it to go back to 1-8 rather than how it’s set up divisionally, but the league really likes the fact that you’ve got meaningful games in round one, significantly meaningful games in round one, like Dallas, Minnesota.” Pagnotta added.

He further said that the league would set up games between the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild, which would act as an example that everyone will watch and follow closely. According to NHL experts, those kinds of series help produce better TV ratings and audience engagement throughout the entire playoffs, which will provide a major advantage to the league.

Pagnotta added further that though they know the earlier 1-8 format would better reward top teams and would be fairer, the league is still adamant.

The NHL appears to be committed to keeping the current divisional playoff format, indicating that the controversial first-round matchups between elite teams are likely to happen in the coming days.
