Wayne Gretzky is suing his ex-business partner over weight loss gum claims

Wayne Gretzky, considered by many as the best player in the history of the NHL, finds himself today involved in a court fight concerning weight loss claims with a disputed product. The legendary hockey player sued his one-time business partner, Veera Mahajan, for malicious prosecution after she sued him in 2022 for helping sell a weight loss gum known as "OMG."

Wayne Gretzky once again involved in a sticky legal situation

Veera Mahajan, one of the investors in OMG, initially blamed Wayne Gretzky for making false claims that he had lost 35 pounds through the gum, which resulted in losses when the company eventually went bust. She asserted that Wayne Gretzky later confessed to making false statements about his weight loss, which was supposed to be responsible for the product's failure. To claim damages, she filed a lawsuit, only to subsequently seek the case to be dismissed.


As reported by The New York Post, Gretzky has now gone on the offensive, suing Mahajan in Los Angeles County for allegedly bringing her case solely in hopes of coercing him into a expensive settlement. Gretzky contends that Mahajan hoped he would pay "millions in order to avoid potential negative publicity," something he denies vehemently. His suit doesn't claim any specific amount in damages but seeks to hold Mahajan responsible for what he considers to be a frivolous assault on his reputation.

As Gretzky battles back against Mahajan's allegations, his legal battle with OMG is only just beginning. The company's founder, Steven Sparks, also sued Gretzky for similar wrongdoing. That case is still pending, which could keep the hockey legend in court for months or even years.

In spite of the legal controversy, Gretzky's place in NHL history is unscathed. He continues to maintain the all-time marks for goals, assists, and points. His most recognizable record—894 career goals—is, however, on the brink of being equaled. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is currently less than ten goals shy of matching Gretzky's benchmark, further increasing the intrigue around the hockey universe's most iconic milestone.
