Utah Mammoth seize wild card control after statement win over Washington Capitals
With a 3-2 statement win over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena, the Utah Mammoth have further solidified their standing atop the first Western Conference wild card and have moved one step closer towards making history. At 32-25-4, with 21 games remaining on the schedule, the Utah Mammoth are now in complete control of their fate.
Head coach Andre Tourigny has been preparing his team for this moment since day one of training camp. After five seasons behind the bench, including the final years of the Arizona Coyotes before the team relocated, this is the moment the Utah Mammoth have been preparing for.
"A good bounce-back just right from the start," Keller said. "We talked about it. It wasn't the way we wanted to play last game. We wanted to kind of flush it, and I thought we did a great job, and everyone contributed tonight. It was a great effort."
Utah’s grip on a playoff position remains tight with a one-point advantage over the Seattle Kraken. The team has a four-point lead over the San Jose Sharks. The team’s general manager, Bill Armstrong, has made it clear that the team wants more. Utah is looking to add to its roster as the NHL Trade Deadline draws closer. Armstrong has said that qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs is the next step in the Utah franchise’s evolution.
The hunger in the locker room is undeniable. Keller, Lawson Crouse, Nick Schmaltz, and Barrett Hayton are the last remaining players from the last time the organization made a postseason appearance in 2020, in the pandemic bubble. For young talents such as Logan Cooley and JJ Peterka, the postseason is new territory.
Utah has also added championship credentials to its roster, adding Stanley Cup winners such as Sergachev, Ian Cole, and Nate Schmidt to their roster, providing stability in the lineup during critical moments in games.
However, now, in the last six weeks of the regular season, the Mammoth know what is at stake: not just a postseason bid, but also the possibility of sparking postseason hockey in Utah for the first time in history.
For Tourigny, the message was clear: this is the step they have been waiting years to take. The opportunity is now. The control is theirs.
