The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly interested in Joe Pavelski as a head coach. Pavelski is expected to land an interview, despite having no professional head coaching experience, Elliotte Friedman said on the “32 Thoughts” podcast. The report runs counter to prior expectations that Toronto would seek a more experienced bench boss.

Pavelski’s reputation around the league and his leadership qualities make him an intriguing candidate in the search process, Friedman said.

Joe Pavelski earned a lot of respect over the course of his NHL career, playing for the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars. Friedman also gave an example of Vegas Golden Knights forward Tomas Hertl: Pavelski reached out to Hertl during a long scoring drought and told him to go back to basics, The Athletic’s insider said. Later, Hertl ended the drought, another sign of Pavelski's ability to connect with players.

Pavelski is a youth hockey coach with the Madison Capitals, so he has experience working with younger players. Pavelski is believed to have a genuine interest in the opportunity and could be among the next group of candidates, Friedman said.

Many analysts have likened the situation to the Montreal Canadiens’ signing of Martin St. Louis. Pavelski, like St. Louis, isn’t a professional coach, but he carries some credibility from his successful NHL career. It may be a sign of a shift toward leadership and communication skills over traditional coaching résumés.
