Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews takes accountability for the team's struggles after disastrous season
As the Toronto Maple Leafs endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign, captain Auston Matthews did not shy away from addressing the disappointment and took the responsibility for the team's struggle following the disastrous season. He offered a blunt and honest message to the fanbase following the season's conclusion. It is to be noted that Matthews had to quit midway due to his unfortunate lower-body injury.
Matthews suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad confusion, an injury severe enough to rule him out for the rest of the 2025-26 regular season. Following his injury, he hadn't spoken about it until now, when the captain had opened up for the first time. According to the NHL, Matthews had 53 points (27 goals, 26 assists) in 60 games this season for the Maple Leafs. Unfortunately, the Toronto Maple Leafs had to make an early exit without competing in the Stanley Cup run this year.
Auston Matthews, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has taken full responsibility for the team’s struggles following a disastrous season. Speaking after the Leafs failed to meet expectations and missed the playoffs for the first time in years, Matthews acknowledged both the team’s shortcomings and the frustration felt by supporters. The star forward admitted the performance wasn’t good enough.
Matthews stated, “This was a tough year. It was a frustrating year. We didn’t meet the goals or the expectations that we set out at the start. Taking accountability for the same, he further stated, “Ultimately, that’s on me. That’s on us as players. We’re the ones that have to go out there and compete and play the game. We didn’t do that well enough this year, consistently enough this year to put ourselves in a better spot.”
He emphasized that fans had every right to feel frustrated, given the team’s high expectations and history of falling short in crucial moments. His words reflected both personal responsibility and a broader acknowledgment of the organization’s failure to deliver results.
“We love our fans, and we appreciate our fans. We understand their frustration; we wear that alongside them. Everybody here wants to win, wants to do their part, to help the team win,” he added.
Reports suggest that Matthews was seen walking into the scrum with a knee brace on, which signalled his recovery was progressing in the right direction. When asked by reporters how his recovery was going, he said he expects this summer to be a normal one and that he will be good to go for next season, as reported by Leafs Nations.
The 28-year-old star also stated that the team must learn from the setbacks, and as the management changes are underway, uncertainty surrounds the roster; the Leafs are facing a critical period of transition. Amidst the trade speculation, he also added that he loves being the captain of the team and feels that it is an incredible honor for him.
