The race to 895: How Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky took different paths to goal-scoring greatness

For decades, Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record of 894 has stood as an unbreakable benchmark in the NHL. While Gretzky had five seasons of 60+ goals, Ovechkin’s career-high remains 65—impressive, but still shy of The Great One’s otherworldly numbers.
Now at age 39, Ovechkin is on the doorstep of history. Sitting at 889 goals, he needs just a handful more to surpass Gretzky. Given his durability and scoring touch, it’s no longer a question of if, but when.
