The hockey world thrives on debates, but former NHL forward Mike Rupp ignited a firestorm when he suggested that Jack Hughes should be ranked above Auston Matthews. His bold take—delivered during an NHL Network broadcast in late August—continues to ripple through hockey circles, with analysts and fans quick to clap back.

TSN’s Overdrive panel calls the take “outrageous” and questions Mike Rupp’s logic

Rupp’s words were simple but controversial: “A healthy Jack Hughes, I would take him over Auston Matthews.” That line immediately caught the attention of TSN’s Overdrive crew, who wasted no time dismantling the argument.Jeff O’Neill didn’t hold back, mocking the claim: “Rupp was like, Jack Hughes is way better than Auston. I wanted to call, I don’t have his number, but I want to say, Rupp, let’s get real here, come on.” Bryan Hayes added, “That is outrageous. I’ll grant you if you said, you know, Barkov, like, I could listen to that, Eichel, maybe, (but comparing Matthews to) Jack Hughes?”
The panel pointed out that Matthews has already proven himself as one of the NHL’s most dangerous scorers, nearly hitting 70 goals in the 2023–24 season. O’Neill summarized the sentiment bluntly: “Are you high, dude? That guy scored 70 goals.”

Auston Matthews’ resume keeps him ahead of Jack Hughes despite his injuries

Beyond opinions, the numbers also lean heavily in Matthews’ favor. Even in an injury-shortened 2024 season, he recorded 33 goals and 78 points in 67 games. Hughes, meanwhile, logged 27 goals and 70 points in 62 games. Matthews has also built an elite résumé—three Rocket Richard Trophies, a Hart Trophy, and consistent dominance since being drafted in 2016.
Hughes is still just 24 and has flashed brilliance with his speed and playmaking, but his frequent injuries have kept him from sustaining elite production. While his ceiling remains high, most analysts agree Matthews remains the superior all-around force today. Also Read: “He’s going to….”: Connor McDavid’s contract future keeps NHL buzzing as TNT’s Paul Bissonette shifts his stanceFor now, the debate proves one thing: hockey fans love controversy—but Matthews’ numbers and accolades speak louder than any hot take.
