Team USA manages injury setbacks as championship clash with Canada nears

Team USA’s Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk, who were sidelined for Monday’s game against Sweden, were back at practice on Wednesday and are set to play in the final against Canada. After partaking in practice on Wednesday, Matthews confirmed he’ll suit up and told a scrum of reporters, “There’s no way I was missing this game.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs' star, Matthew, has reported an improvement in discomfort that has kept him out of Monday's lineup. The injury, which has been recurring since pre-season, has caused him to miss 15 regular season games. He has also had a nine-day injured list residency in November and a six-game layoff in December and January.

Brady Tkachuk, who left Monday’s game early due to an injury, missed Wednesday’s practice. Coach Mike Sullivan mentioned that Brady wasn’t feeling well but expressed confidence that he would be ready for Thursday’s championship match.

Coach Mike Sullivan stated that Charlie McAvoy is the only player definitely unavailable for Team USA’s final against Canada. McAvoy was hospitalized with an infection after playing against Sweden on Monday and will not be able to participate in the championship game.

Coach Mike Sullivan explained that Quinn Hughes will only travel to Boston for the final if he becomes eligible to play. According to NHL rules, Hughes can only join Team USA if another defenseman is sidelined due to injury. Currently, he is not en route to Boston, but that could change if a last-minute roster adjustment is needed.
