Slovakia shows resilience in quarterfinal victory over Germany at the Winter Olympic Games 2026
Team Slovakia has shown its determination and grit, as it defeated Germany 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the men's hockey tournament at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, advancing to the semifinals, which is scheduled to be held on Friday. Despite a scary injury to star forward Juraj Slafkovsky in the second period, the team rallied with two quick goals to secure the win at Santagiulia Arena.
As per reports, the team scored two goals in 33 seconds and cruised to a 6-2 victory to become the No. 3 seed in the semifinals against an opponent that is yet to be determined. The team is eyeing to secure a position at the semi-finals and the finals of the men’s hockey tournament at the Winter Olympic Games. With this achievement, Team Slovakia will now face its opponent on February 20, determined by the remaining quarterfinal results.
As Slovakia advanced to the men’s ice hockey semifinals at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games with a commanding 6–2 victory over Germany in the quarterfinals at the Santagiulia Arena on Wednesday, the team has demonstrated extreme courage, backed by a solid spirit of confidence and determination. Despite Juraj Slafkovsky’s injury during the second period of the quarterfinal game, the team managed to secure its victory.
According to NHL.com, the Slovaks were holding a one-goal lead; unfortunately, the team's main star player crashed awkwardly into the boards after a collision with German defenseman Fabio Wagner. Following the incident, Slafkovsky gathered himself and retreated to the bench, with the trainer providing him an ice pack on his neck.
Speaking about Slafkovsky’s injury, Slovakia’s captain, Tomas Tatar, stated, "We continued. We scored the goal. That spirit [shows]. It's great. We wanted to stay concentrated. We didn't want to get shaken up by hits. We wanted to be focused, and I think we were."
The player did not stop himself from celebrating the win. Slafkovsky, who was seen with an ice pack still on his neck, jumped in excitement despite the injury. "It was a great feeling. That ice pack felt so good, and then we got two goals. I will try to do it again, but I won't try to hit my head, but I'll try the ice pack," Slafkovsky stated.
Moreover, sharing his view about the win, Slovakia coach Vladimir Orszagh said, "Our team is not about a couple of top guys. Our team is about 22 guys, 25 guys. They stick together in practice and on the ice. Every day, somebody else is a hero. To me, all the guys are heroes; doesn't matter if you play one minute or 20 minutes, everyone chips in."
He further added, "We are a band of brothers who work for the team, work for each other, and are living our dream. We are still living. We are in the top four." As the No. 3 seed, Slovakia could face the United States, Finland, Sweden, or Czechia, depending on the winners of the US vs. Sweden and Canada vs. Czechia. If top seeds advance, Slovakia may meet Team USA, while Canada will probably play Finland.
