Sidney Crosby has been the face of the Pittsburgh Penguins for nearly two decades, leading the franchise to three Stanley Cup championships and establishing himself as one of the greatest players in NHL history. However, recent speculation suggests that his time in Pittsburgh could be nearing an unexpected end.
NHL scout suggests Sidney Crosby may leave Pittsburgh after next season
Despite his continued elite performance—most recently surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record with 20 consecutive seasons averaging at least one point per game— Sidney Crosby’s future with the Penguins is in question. According to an NHL scout cited by Martin McGuire on 98.5 FM, "I can hardly imagine Sidney Crosby staying in Pittsburgh beyond next season."
The Penguins' struggles this season, with a disappointing 29–34–11 record and fading playoff hopes, have fueled speculation that Crosby might seek a move to a contending team for another Stanley Cup run.
Would the Colorado Avalanche be a perfect fit for Sidney Crosby?
Before the NHL trade deadline, rumors linked Crosby to the Colorado Avalanche, a team that could provide him with a legitimate shot at another championship. While TNT analyst Paul Bissonnette dismissed the speculation as unlikely, the idea remains intriguing. Crosby shares a strong bond with Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, stemming from their time representing Canada in international tournaments and offseason training together.
Praising MacKinnon’s recent 1,000-point milestone, Crosby stated, "Anytime you see guys up close and how hard they work and how much they put into it, you want to see them get rewarded."

St. Louis Blues sign University of Minnesota star Jimmy Snuggerud to three-year dealAlthough the Penguins have publicly stated they have no plans to trade their captain, Crosby holds the power to dictate his future. His two-year, $17.4 million contract extension includes a full no-movement clause, meaning he would need to approve any trade. If Crosby does decide to chase another title, Pittsburgh may have no choice but to grant him that opportunity.
