For years, Wayne Gretzky stood alone in one of hockey’s most remarkable statistical achievements. But now, he has company. Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has cemented his name alongside “The Great One” by accomplishing a feat only Gretzky had achieved before recording 60 or more assists in nine consecutive seasons.

Connor McDavid’s 60-Assist streak enters elite territory

In the Oilers’ recent 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, McDavid registered two assists, officially marking his ninth straight season with at least 60. The significance? Until now, Gretzky was the sole player in NHL history to maintain such a streak, as reported by ESPN.

McDavid’s run began in his second NHL season, and since then, his playmaking skills have only sharpened. Over this stretch, he has accumulated 615 assists and counting, including four seasons leading the league in assists. His career-best of 100 assists last season underscores his dominance as one of the most gifted passers in the modern game.

While McDavid’s accomplishment is extraordinary, Gretzky’s numbers remain on another level. As a 19-year-old rookie with the Oilers in 1979-80, Gretzky notched 86 assists. From that season through 1991-92, he posted an unprecedented 11 straight seasons with 100 or more assists, peaking at 163 in the 1985-86 campaign.

With McDavid currently at 705 career assists at age 28, he still has a long climb to reach Gretzky’s all-time mark of 1,963. For context, the second-place holder, Ron Francis, sits far behind at 1,249 assists, emphasizing just how untouchable Gretzky’s record remains.

Can Connor McDavid extend historic NHL assist streak?

Given McDavid’s exceptional vision and ability to create plays, there’s little reason to believe his assist streak will end anytime soon. Barring injury, he could very well extend this run for multiple seasons and further cement his legacy as one of hockey’s greatest playmakers.

While the hockey world watches Alex Ovechkin chase Gretzky’s goal record of 894, McDavid is quietly building a historic case of his own. Though surpassing Gretzky’s assist record remains a distant dream, his ability to carve out a place alongside the greatest to ever play the game is undeniable.
