NHL update: Montreal Canadiens sign Bryce Pickford to three-year entry-level contract

Defenceman Bryce Pickford has been signed by the Montreal Canadiens, and a three-year entry-level contract was announced by the team on Wednesday. The agreement will take effect in the 2026–27 season, thereby allowing Montreal to further evaluate the player through junior hockey before he moves on to the big leagues.

With a perfect combination of offense and defense, the 19-year-old player is now the captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers and is already giving the performances of the highest level across the league, which is why he is getting the most attention. The signing has been confirmed by Montreal's general manager, Kent Hughes, who has also reiterated the team’s strategic plan to incorporate youth in its roster.

Why Bryce Pickford earned a long-term commitment from Montreal Canadiens

The Medicine Hat Tigers’ frontman has been a leading factor in the Canadiens’ decision. He is the leading scorer in the league with 25 goals and has also provided 19 assists for a total of 44 points in just 31 WHL games this season. His score is at the top of the league, while his point production is considered one of the best in the WHL, irrespective of the player's position.
Moreover, the guy from Edmonton is about to reach another personal record as he merely needs three more points to tie his previous high of 47 points that he had scored last season. Even though it is Pickford’s 4th year in the WHL, he has been constantly growing and adapting to the NHL development staff’s requirements, which are the qualities they seek in prospects.

Having won WHL titles in consecutive seasons, Pickford also brings championship experience to the team. He started with the Seattle Thunderbirds, and after winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup, he went on to complete another championship run with the Medicine Hat Tigers last season.

The Canadiens picked Pickford in the third round, 81st overall, in the 2025 NHL Draft, and he quickly proved that the selection was right by his further development.
