NHL Trade Rumors: Detroit Red Wings Target Calgary Flames’ MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri in potential trade deal

The Detroit Red Wings front office is no longer interested in a long-term rebuilding era. Detroit Tigers have become an actual trade market team because they sit close to the Atlantic Division lead. A major trade that will affect the Calgary Flames is being discussed, according to TSN insider Darren Dreger.

The Detroit organization had shown interest in right-shot defenseman Rasmus Andersson, who later joined the Vegas Golden Knights. The current focus has turned to two top players from Calgary, who include defenseman MacKenzie Weegar and veteran center Nazem Kadri.

Why are Detroit Red Wings interested in MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri?

Darren Dreger reported on the Barn Burner podcast that the Red Wings choose to sign players who have contract extensions because they need to protect their current roster players from teams that want to acquire them through trade.
Dreger explained that Detroit needs players who will stay with the team beyond the current season because they require both a right-shot defenseman and a scoring forward. He stated that the Red Wings need to identify their center position needs because they want to find a top two center player.

Kadri signed a seven-year, $49 million contract, which extends until 2029. He reached his career decline stage, but he still maintains the ability to score goals after making 35 goals in the previous season while bringing his Stanley Cup championship to Colorado in 2022.

Weegar functions as a right-handed defenseman who participates in all game scenarios while playing extensive minutes. He signed an eight-year, $50 million contract, which makes him lead the Flames with more than 23 minutes of ice time per game, and he will fulfill Detroit's requirements for their right defense position. The Red Wings can create a substantial trade offer because they possess almost $13 million in salary cap room and a strong pool of upcoming players.

The Red Wings have reached an exceptional situation because they need to acquire new players through their current advantages. Steve Yzerman possesses all the necessary resources to achieve substantial team improvement through his capacity to acquire new players and maintain salary cap flexibility, and his existing player development progress.
