The 2025 NHL trade deadline is fast approaching, with teams assessing their rosters and strategizing for the process. The 4 Nations Face-Off break has allowed teams to prepare, with roughly two weeks left before the deadline.
The Eastern Conference is expected to be highly active at the trade deadline, with many teams still in playoff contention and potentially seeking to strengthen their rosters for the final stretch of the season.

When is NHL Trade Deadline 2025?

The NHL trade deadline is set for March 7, 2025 at 3 p.m. ET. Players can be moved after the deadline, but they won't be available for their new team until the following season. If two teams reach a post-deadline agreement, it's possible. Teams can still make trades even in the playoffs, but players won't be available until the following campaign.

NHL Trade Deadline: No-Trade and No-Movement Clauses

No-trade clauses (NTC) are common in NHL contracts, preventing teams from trading players without their approval. Players with NTCs must waive it before being dealt to a different team.
A no-movement clause (NMC) is a legal provision that prevents teams from transferring a player to the minor leagues or placing them on waivers. It is only available to players aged 27 or older or those who have played in the NHL for seven or more seasons. Modified no-trade (M-NTC) or no-movement clauses (M-NMC) allow players to create a list of teams they would refuse to trade to.
The length and number of teams in a contract's clause depend on the deal's language. For instance, a player can have a modified no-trade clause in the first two years but may not have one after those seasons.

NHL trades only involve players who are under contract with their current teams or RFA players whose rights are owned by the team; free agent players, whose contracts have expired (July 1), cannot be traded by their former teams, and are free to join a different team.
