NHL prospect Gavin McKenna's mother faces criminal charges tied to underage alcohol allegations
The family of Gavin McKenna is facing renewed legal scrutiny after reports surfaced that the Penn State hockey star's mother, Krystal McKenna, has been charged with furnishing alcohol to minors in connection with the same incident in which McKenna was allegedly involved in an assault in State College, Pennsylvania.
According to court documents cited by multiple reports, Krystal McKenna was charged with two misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to minors following an investigation into events that took place on Jan. 31. Authorities allege she provided alcoholic drinks to her son and two underage women inside Doggie’s Pub prior to the alleged altercation involving the projected top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
In a shocking incident, the mother of top NHL prospect Gavin McKenna is facing criminal charges after authorities in Pennsylvania accused her of furnishing alcohol to minors during an incident connected to an ongoing assault case involving the Penn State hockey star.
Reports suggest that Krystal McKenna already grabbed the limelight because of a January incident involving her son, Gavin McKenna. According to the statement, Gavin allegedly became angry after a man said insulting or offensive things to his mother.
In response, Gavin reportedly punched the man, knocking him down and allegedly breaking his jaw. Because of the seriousness of the injury, Gavin was initially charged with felony assault. However, the prosecutors later dropped the felony-level charge, likely after reviewing evidence or determining the case did not meet the legal standard for a felony offense.
However, it has now come to light that Krystal McKenna has been charged with illegally providing alcohol to minors, according to a criminal docket filed last month. The date of the offense suggests a connection to the previous incident or just an incredible coincidence.
Reports suggest that the offense is alleged to have occurred on January 31st, which was the very same day that Gavin McKenna was charged by law enforcement for the aforementioned assault that resulted in a broken jaw.
As of yet, there has been no verdict from the court’s end related to the case, but reports suggest that Krystal McKenna's preliminary hearing for this new charge is currently scheduled for June 30th at 8:30 am, just weeks before the NHL Draft.
As the 2026 NHL Entry Draft will be taking place on the 26th and 27th of June of this year, the family might find it difficult to celebrate Gavin’s likely high draft selection because they are also dealing with legal stress and public scrutiny.
