The sports world bids farewell to the life and legacy of the former National Hockey League center Troy Murray, who passed away on Saturday morning at the ripe old age of 63 after a long and grueling battle with cancer.Troy Murray, the respected two-way center and longtime voice of the Chicago Blackhawks, has left behind a legacy that extends far beyond his illustrious on-ice career. From his Selke Trophy-winning days in the 1980s to his long and illustrious days with the Chicago Blackhawks, Troy Murray has become one of the most recognizable and respected names in the world of hockey.

Former Blackhawks player, beloved broadcaster Troy Murray dies
During his illustrious 15-year National Hockey League playing career, which took place from 1981 to 1996, Troy Murray donned the jerseys of a wide range of different teams, including the Winnipeg Jets, the Ottawa Senators, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Colorado Avalanche. However, it is with the Chicago Blackhawks that Murray established the groundwork for his legacy, having spent 12 years with the franchise after being drafted by the team with the 57th overall pick in the 1980 National Hockey League Entry Draft.Murray's best season occurred during the 1985–86 campaign when he accumulated 99 points, including 45 goals and 54 assists. He received the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward in the league. This award reinforced his position as one of the best two-way centers in the NHL.
Throughout his NHL career, Murray accumulated 584 points from 230 goals and 354 assists in 915 regular-season contests. He made 43 postseason appearances in 113 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Murray's career concluded in 1996 as he helped the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup.However, Murray's involvement in hockey did not end when he retired. In 1998, he joined the Blackhawks broadcasting team. He is currently a radio color analyst for the Chicago Blackhawks. Murray works alongside John Wiedeman. Together, the duo has broadcast the Blackhawks' championship seasons in 2010, 2013, and 2015.After being diagnosed with cancer in 2021, Murray continued to show the resilience that marked his playing career. Despite undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Murray went back to work in the broadcast booth in 2021, where he received an outpouring of support from fans, peers, and players. For many in the Blackhawks organization, Murray was more than a former player and broadcaster—he was a mentor, a friend, and a presence through multiple generations of Blackhawks hockey. Troy Murray was not only a part of Blackhawks history—he also helped write it.
