NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman clarifies Toronto Maple Leafs' stance surrounding forward Matthew Knies trade rumors
As the Toronto Maple Leafs were listening to trade offers for young forward Matthew Knies during the trade deadline, which prompted fans to keep wondering if the Leafs are going to trade Knies as part of a bigger roster shakeup, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has cleared up the Maple Leafs' stance and what was really going on with those talks. Friedman explained that the trade conversations had nothing to do with the Leafs' position on Matthew Knies.
In fact, Knies has quickly become an important part of Toronto’s lineup and is still highly valued inside the organization. The 23‑year‑old player, who is still regarded as the Leafs’ most valuable young forward, also drew several interested parties despite the organization’s reluctance to move him.
According to the NHL, in 2025-26, Matthew Knies has played 67 games. He scored 18 goals with 39 assists, securing a total of 57 points. In his career, the Maple Leafs forward has earned 62 goals, 89 assists, and 151 points in 228 games played, making him one of the marquee players of the club.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has cleared the air surrounding the trade speculation surrounding Maple Leafs' forward Matthew Knies during the NHL trade deadline. Earlier, during the trade deadline, speculations were doing the rounds about whether the Maple Leafs were considering trading Knies this offseason as part of a larger roster change.
But, putting an end to the rumor, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman recently clarified the organization's position ahead of Toronto's home game against the Carolina Hurricanes. He made it clear that the trade discussion had nothing to do with the Maple Leafs' dissatisfaction over Knies as a player. They were not actively trying to move Knies. Instead, the Maple Leafs were evaluating the market and trying to determine what kind of return he would bring to the team.
Friedman emphasized that it was an important decision. He further stated that the organization was analyzing, "What if we did this? What would the return be? I don't think any of this talk around Knies has anything to do with him as a player." He has repeatedly stressed that Toronto does not view Knies as a problem; his age, performance, and contract make him a valuable asset that other clubs desire to possess.
In addition, he also revealed the names of the prominent NHL clubs that made serious attempts to acquire Matthew Knies from the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Friedman, the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Utah Mammoth all showed “serious interest” in acquiring Knies before the deadline.
This discussion has implied that while Toronto might be exploring possibilities and gathering information in the trade market, it would likely take an extraordinary offer for the other clubs to acquire Knies, as he continues to be one of the valuable assets of the Toronto Maple Leafs due to his physical presence and excellent playmaking skills.
