In a development stirring debate across the hockey world, an NHL analyst landed in controversy after delivering a harsh comparison between Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid. He contrasted his play with that of Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid following Saturday night’s matchup.

The NHL analyst dropped the comments after the Edmonton Oilers secured a 6–3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a high-scoring game at Scotiabank Arena. During the match, it was seen that Connor McDavid, who is widely regarded as the league’s premier player, led the Oilers’ offensive charge, while the Leafs struggled to keep pace.

NHL analysts JD Bunkis and Sam McKee have landed themselves in controversy after they compared Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid’s performance. As per reports, McDavid finished the night with two goals and an assist, driving Edmonton’s offense as the Oilers scored five unanswered goals across the second and third periods to pull away. Matthews and the Maple Leafs team were held off the scoresheet as he failed to record a goal or an assist.

The controversy arose during the post-game discussion on Sportsnet 590 The Fan, analysts JD Bunkis and Sam McKee questioned whether the matchup still carries the same weight it once did and compared the form of Mathhews and McDavid in terms of their performance.

According to the analysts, they stated, “So I got excited to see the game on the schedule just like you did,” Bunkis said. “But watching it tonight, my question coming out of this is, is it going to have the same juice given the gap between the two guys we used to bill this about has never been greater?”


Bunkis further stated, “How many times my biggest Auston Matthews ‘I noticed him’ moment was a backcheck on McDavid. One guy was creating a million plays at the net and a bunch of goals, and the other guy, you were hoping for a good backcheck.” (source: Sportskeeda)

According to the analyst, Matthews didn’t quite meet the expectations this season, especially when he is compared to his contemporary's McDavid’s performance and his impact on the ice.
