New York Rangers GM Chris Drury keeps trade options open for Artemi Panarin
The New York Rangers made a franchise-altering decision Friday afternoon. Star winger Artemi Panarin was informed he will not receive a contract extension and that the organization is prepared to work with him on a trade to any destination of his choosing.
The announcement came as part of a broader retool outlined in a letter to fans from Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury. He met individually with members of the leadership group before addressing the entire team and releasing his public statement.
Drury's letter acknowledged the disappointing direction of the season while emphasizing this marks a new course for the organization built around core players and prospects. "No one in the organization is happy with what has transpired," Drury wrote, noting the changes represent "a retool built around our core players and prospects."
The letter added a critical clarification about the scope of the changes. "This will not be a rebuild," Drury stated. Panarin holds a full no-move clause in his contract, giving him complete control over any potential trade.
He could theoretically play out the remainder of the season in New York, but the decision brings clarity to his future and opens a seven-week window before the trade deadline to determine his next destination. The Rangers are willing to work with Panarin and his agent, Paul Theofanous.
This will help both parties to facilitate a trade to any team where the winger believes he can compete for a Stanley Cup this season or sign a long-term extension. Neither Drury nor Theofanous could be reached for comment following the announcement.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that while numerous storylines will emerge from the Rangers' decision to change course, Panarin's future represents the biggest story to follow.
The 33-year-old winger has been one of the franchise's most productive players since signing with New York and possesses the leverage to dictate his destination through his no-move clause. The retool comes after a disappointing start to the season for a Rangers team that entered the year with Stanley Cup aspirations.
Rather than continuing down the current path or committing to a full rebuild, Drury has chosen a middle ground that maintains the core while making significant changes. Panarin now faces a decision that will define both his career trajectory and the Rangers' immediate future.
He can choose to remain in New York through the season or pick a contender where he believes he has the best chance to win a championship. With seven weeks until the trade deadline, the hockey world will watch closely as one of the league's premier wingers determines his next move.
