The Devils were hanging by a thread already, and the announcement of a
Jack Hughe’s long-term injury means they've severed that thread. The team disclosed on the very day of March 5 that Hughes had thereupon received successful surgery on his right shoulder and would now be on long-term injured reserve (LTIR). The top pick of the 2019 draft was having a phenomenal season with 70 points from 27 goals and 43 assists. Thus, his absence created a massive void in the Devils' lineup which fans mourn: coping with the grim reality.
Defenseman Dougie Hamilton is also listed week to week with an injury suffered due to a collision against the Dallas Stars. Very few fans were there to watch, and most of them would say this is about the toughest time the Devils have faced in a long time.

But many question the conditioning staff, given the increasing number of serious injuries this season. The Devils now come up against the wall facing some significant injuries and dreams of contending in the playoffs by a string thread.
