The hockey world is bracing for news that could reshape the Predators organization. Multiple insiders believe Barry Trotz will announce Monday that he is stepping down as general manager, according to reports from several well-connected sources around the league. The timing comes at a crucial juncture in Nashville's season. After a difficult start to the campaign, the Predators have clawed their way back into playoff contention, sitting just four points out of a postseason spot heading into the Olympic break. With the trade deadline looming in a month, the franchise now faces uncertainty at the top of its front office.

Frank Seravalli believes this decision stems from Barry Trotz’ decision to retire

NHL insider Frank Seravalli provided additional details about the impending announcement Sunday evening. "Predators franchise icon and GM Barry Trotz is addressing his team this morning to inform them of his decision to retire," Seravalli reported. "Thankfully, Trotz's decision is not health-related. Trotz will remain in the post until his successor is found. " Seravalli added that ownership, led by Bill Haslam, has been examining all aspects of team operations in recent months. Haslam and team CEO Sean Henry are expected to answer questions alongside Trotz during a noon CT press conference Monday.
The transition plan allows for continuity during a critical stretch of the season. Trotz will stay on as general manager until the organization identifies and hires his replacement, ensuring stability as the team pushes toward the playoffs and navigates the approaching trade deadline. But while questions have arisen since the news first broke this morning, Trotz remains one of the most integral figures in the history of Nashville. He was appointed their inaugural coach back in 1997, when the Predators hadn’t even made their debut and remained in that position for the next 17 years. His initial decision to leave the bench behind in April 2014 was shocking enough. He later won the Stanley Cup as head coach of the Washington Capitals in 2018 before joining the New York Islanders. Trotz returned to Nashville in 2023 as the second general manager in franchise history, replacing David Poile after his legendary 26-year tenure. The Predators currently hold a 22-20-4 record in the Central Division as they await Monday's official announcement.
