A new chapter in Mikko Rantanen’s career

Mikko Rantanen’s journey took an unexpected turn when he was traded twice in a matter of weeks. Initially dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes on January 24, the move shocked both fans and the star forward himself. His dynamic partnership with Nathan MacKinnon was abruptly ended, leaving many wondering why the Avalanche parted ways with such a key player.

Despite his initial hopes of staying in Colorado, Mikko Rantanen knew the NHL was a business. “At the end of the day, I always wanted to stay in Colorado,” he said. “That was the plan, and that’s what I told the front office, too. I told them face-to-face that I was going to be flexible, but I understand. Better players than me have been traded in the history of NHL. So it happens. It’s part of the business.”

After just 13 games with the Hurricanes, where he contributed two goals and four assists, Rantanen was on the move again. On March 7, Carolina sent him to Dallas in exchange for Logan Stankoven and multiple draft picks. The Stars wasted no time locking him in for the long haul, signing him to an eight-year, $96 million contract.

Facing the Avalanche for the first time

Sunday’s game marked Rantanen’s first as a visitor in Denver, and the crowd’s reaction was as intense as expected. While many still chanted his nickname, “Moose,” others made their disappointment known. The loudest boos came when Rantanen notched an assist on the Stars’ first goal of the game, an immediate reminder of the skill that made him a franchise icon in Colorado.

While his Avalanche days are behind him, Rantanen’s impact on the franchise remains undeniable. Now, he’s focused on a new challenge, helping the Stars make a deep playoff run and proving he’s worth every penny of his blockbuster contract.
