Mike Benning Makes NHL Debut With Florida Panthers Following in His Father's Footsteps
The Florida Panthers welcomed a familiar surname back to South Florida on Thursday, recalling defenseman Mike Benning from the AHL ahead of their home matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Amerant Bank Arena. For the organization, it was a routine roster move.
But for the Benning family, it was history. Brian Benning suited up for Florida's inaugural team back in 1993-94, making Thursday's debut a full-circle moment more than 30 years in the making. Mike taking to the ice for the Panthers, following in his father's footsteps, is a story that stretches far beyond a single hockey game.
Head coach Paul Maurice made clear from the outset that Thursday's game carries a different weight than most. Rather than focusing on Benning's tactical role, Maurice stripped the night back to what it truly represents, for the player and everyone who helped get him there.
"It's not about the hockey game for him," Maurice said. He acknowledged the parents, coaches, and teachers who helped shape Benning's path, saying he wants those people to see him "having the time of his life." Benning received that message warmly.
"Just smile and enjoy it," he said. "You only get one of these in your life. Make the most of it." His father is expected in the building, adding another layer to an already charged atmosphere.
Benning is a fourth-round pick by the Panthers in the 2020 NHL Draft who turned 24 in January. He has posted 31 points across 56 AHL games this season and slots alongside veteran Niko Mikkola, replacing Uvis Balinskis, who is dealing with an injury.
From a hockey standpoint, Maurice sees a player ready to contribute immediately. He described Benning as a strong-skating, puck-moving defenseman with good agility and the courage to close gaps. "I want him to play with that courage to show he can do that," the coach added.
The Benning name carries real meaning in Panthers history. Brian was among the original players when Florida entered the league in 1993-94, which gives Mike's debut a generational quality that stands apart from any ordinary first NHL game. "It's a little Benning history," Mike said simply.
Thursday's matchup is critical for both sides. The Panthers have won back-to-back games to improve to 32-29-3, while the Blue Jackets sit at 33-21-10 and trail the Bruins by just two points for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Columbus enters having snapped a two-game skid with a 5-2 win over the Lightning on Tuesday. Zach Werenski leads the Blue Jackets with 68 points this season. Sergei Bobrovsky starts for the Panthers, while Elvis Merzlikins is set to start for Columbus.
