Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll reflects on shootout loss to Sabres, says “It didn’t feel like a home game"
As the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered another frustrating defeat after a 3-2 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres, goaltender Joseph Woll reflected on the same, saying that it didn't feel like a home game. He noted that the KeyBank Center in Buffalo lacked its usual Toronto fan dominance, and the atmosphere made it feel far from comfortable for the visiting side.
Reports suggest that during the game Sabres made two of their three shots in the shootout, and the Maple Leafs misfired on both attempts. The Sabres rallied to tie the game 2-2 on Jack Quinn's power-play goal, with Quinn and Alex Tuch scoring in the shootout to secure the win. Let’s take a look at what the goaltender had to say about the match.
The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a narrow defeat against the Buffalo Sabres after falling 3-2 in a shootout loss. Following the disappointing results for the Leafs, goaltender Joseph Woll admitted that the result was frustrating, especially after the team battled hard throughout the game.
Speaking after the game, Woll expressed disappointment with the outcome and reflected on the atmosphere during the matchup. He stated, "This is one of the first times I've played here where it didn't feel like a home game, which kind of sucks. It's nice to have our fans here, but good for Buffalo coming out. It was a pretty exciting building tonight."
The goaltender further stated, "I thought we were really solid. Building off the third period from the last game, I thought we carried that straight into tonight. I liked our energy, a pretty solid game from us, from the back end out." (source: Sportskeeda)
According to reports, Woll delivered a solid performance in net, making several attempts to save the Leafs. He managed to save 30 goals on 33 shots in his third straight start. Despite his efforts, the contest remained tied and had to be decided in a shootout, where the Sabres ultimately came out on top. In the penalty shootout attempts, Max Domi scored for Toronto in the second period, but Alex Lyon stopped both Leafs' shootout attempts.
Besides, the goaltender also expressed that playing without captain Auston Matthews, out for the season with a knee injury, feels "gut-wrenching," adding, “I just hope for the best for his healing and hope he comes back strong and ready to go next year.”
